General Gordon and the State Road in Georgia History
In 1872 a legislative committee investigated the State road lease and heard testimonies from Ben Hill and Gen. J. B. Gordon. Gordon’s letter declining a share is cited to rebut claims of wrongdoing while defending Hill’s integrity against Macon Telegraph attacks. The piece defends Gordon and Hill, urging truth over political capital.

Civil Service Dictatorship Panics Republicans at Capitol
From the New York World May 20 Republicans fear the House Appropriations Committee bill on Civil Service reforms will shift appointments toward Democrats. The measure challenges the Civil Service Commission, seeks equal party division, and ties salaries to compliance with exam and appointment rules. Delegations crowded the Capitol urging defeat as Democrats hope easier access to departmental posts.

Born Sept 19, 1810 in Duplin County North Carolina, he moved to Georgia then Randolph in 1827 near his present home, married in 1833 to Reena Gilbert, had six children two survived. His memory remains sharp despite blindness from an 18 year old attack. The Campaign in Atlanta Capitol News
The Capitol downplays sensational claims while noting both Bacon and Gordon claim the State. Reports from Montezuma and the Montezuma Record show county loyalties and local activity, including Maxwell’s wheat sample and Eevee’s cotton purchases, amid a tense canvass and neutral press stance.
