The article notes interest in organizing an Americus baseball club with local support led by O A Coleman. A Macon club has challenged Americus to an exhibition, 50 percent of proceeds offered if played in Macon. Lawn tennis and croquet also appear as summer amusements.
The Atlanta Constitution prints a tale of Professor Schneider and a promised marriage that sparked strong local debate. Friends defend him as innocent of criminal intent while the young lady's supporters demand damages for alleged deception. A Natchez visitor reports Schneider left for Europe and may return to Germany. a lawyer notes civil action possible but no criminal case. M.C. A notes invite young men to Dr. Brooks lecture tonight at the Y M C A with free seats.
A grand excursion is planned for Saturday June 2 along the A P & L line to witness the launching of a boat for the Ocmulgee river and to connect at Brunswick with Mallory line steamers. An excursion train replaces the Western Division regular service while the Eastern Division runs on its usual schedule with a reduced fare.
The Democratic Executive Committee of Sumter County invites full attendance at a meeting Saturday at 10 o'clock a.m. in the new courthouse Americus GA. A. B. Corrs, Chairman M. B. Councut, Secretary. Also notices on a Staten Island dyeing firm agent in Americus and a Sydney Australia telephone anecdote with no further action.
A lively crowd of about 2,000 to 3,000 African Americans gathered at Andersonville for Decoration Day. Railroads carried in visitors from Americus and surrounding areas as vendors sold refreshments and soldiers from Macon and Atlanta joined in the cemetery program. Col. Oliver and a RECORDER reporter attended, with ceremonies and prayers planned though weather and heat affected attendance.
The Americus Guano Company held its first annual meeting at the Bank of Americus. A ten percent dividend was declared and capital stock was raised from 25000 to 40000, funded by original stockholders. Directors elected include Hawkins Harrold Coney Green Crapp Plummer Hatch. John M. Green remains president. Hagley and Sams are secretary treasurer and manager. An acid plant will be erected, a major facility for acid phosphate, positioning Americus ahead of Macon Columbus and Eufaula.
The Central Railroad of Georgia advertises the best and cheapest passenger route to New York and Boston via Savannah with steamer connections. Roundtrip tickets go on sale June 1 and are valid through October. Steamer sailings are thrice weekly to New York and weekly to Boston from Savannah.
