Americus Rail Road Venture Wins Subscriptions
In a time of bank panic and scarce money the counties Sumter Webster and Stewart mobilized to secure around $90,000 in subscriptions to finance a railroad from Americus via Preston to Lumpkin. Americus raised $40,000 at a meeting, and directors plan to locate the line, secure rights of way, and award construction contracts, with work likely to begin by September. The project promises faster regional connections, a growing Americus trade base, and strengthened ties with surrounding counties, signaling a new era of enterprise. Rev J J Vans, newly elected pastor of the Americus Baptist church, is welcomed, noted for his leadership in church growth and fundraising for a new brick edifice. The paper also reports a baseball doubleheader with Americus, Oglethorpe, Montezuma, and Montezuma Artesians, including flowers presented to visiting players and playful record-tracking of results.
