In one year the town hosts sixteen stores two hotels a bank two railroads and mills with plans for an artesian well a cotton seed oil mill and a guano factory. New homes rise as outsiders invest locals describe Cordele as enterprising and hopeful with turpentine distillery in the works and hotels crowded by patrons at Hotel de Hamilton run by Col. Tomey.

In Ellaville on January 26 Tam enjoyed a cordial reception and praised the town and its growing newspaper. The Social Literary Club, with sixty members of bright young ladies and gallant young men, met weekly with music readings and recitations, drawing a good attendance despite a murky night. AK J.
