Year in Americus shows growth and progress

The past year brought major improvements to Americus. Rail expansions extended lines to the Ocmulgee river and Buena Vista, with onward aims toward Savannah and Columbus. A new courthouse cost 35000 without debt, banks and investment firms formed, a telegraph exchange grew, water works and gas plans emerged, merchants moved in, wholesale houses opened, and cotton receipts rose to 35000 bales as immigration and trade prospered.

Senator Brown Smiles At Gorman In Capitol Banter

Washington dispatch recalls Georgia Senator Brown and Maryland Senator Gorman sharing a luncheon table amid a New York interviewer furor. Brown teases Gorman about tariff views while Bassett, the Doorkeeper, is praised for his calm. A humor-filled exchange ends with Brown hinting at a sharper barb from a NY reporter. Mentioned notes cover Amherst freshmen smoking, a Phillipsburg tax scare, a Liverpool wire rope for coal mines, and Masai hunting lore.

Bankers reject Sumter bonds in Georgia repurchase dispute

Spicy correspondence from Bravereeer & Curtis and Mr Sidney W. Curtis of New York declines handling Americus bonds. The letters rail at Georgia’s past corruption and repudiation, arguing public sentiment would block municipal debt, while defending the South’s political scapegoats and banking caution amid rail road bond scandals.
