Sugar on Houston farms proves profitable for cane planters
A Houston county farmer, O. Buff of Hickory Grove, yielded 750 lbs of brown sugar and about 700 gallons of syrup from two acres of sugar cane last season. At 30 cents per gallon and 6 cents per pound, the crop nets about 127.50 per acre with potential home use value and possible market sale. If adopted widely, it could boost county prosperity and farm independence, even if used mainly for labor or family needs.
