The Farm and Plantation and the Republican Quake Tale

A Southern Cultivator passage argues the farm replaces the plantation, praising farmers and Christian families in the South while envisioning prosperous rural life. It includes a portrait of postwar South wealth in land and people and laments lost plantation luxury. A separate item recalls Joseph Warren claiming early Michigan credit for founding the Republican Party, urging his candidacy. An earthquake belt extended from southern Maine to central Virginia, with tremors felt along the New Jersey and Long Island coasts, time records varying little and a fatal fright recorded.
