Americus Georgia, county seat of Sumter, sits on the Southwestern railroad 71 miles southwest of Marion and nine miles north of the Florida line. The city boasts mild climate, healthy air, fertile soils, and diverse crops. It describes growing industries, churches, schools, newspapers, banks, and rapid railroad expansion, inviting enterprising merchants and farmers to invest, with information available from the local correspondent in Americus Ga.
The seventeen year old wife of Thomas G Woolfolk arrived with her parents on a shopping trip. She disclosed their hurried marriage on a train near a cemetery where nine of his relatives were buried. She described his brutish behavior and a chilling threat to burn the family for wealth. She denied madness, calling him mean and untrustworthy, and recalled receiving two letters.
Francis Murphy, the temperance lecturer from Pittsburg, rode through on a Texas and New York trip en route to Brooklyn to visit his ill daughter Mrs. Frask.
