Ellaville school officials confront a gender status query affecting enrollment records. The matter lists Ellaville and nearby Marille, Ga, as locations involved, with uncertainty over whether the subject is male or female.
In Dawson on August 5 the Jury Commissioners led by Dr W C Paschal and others renew the jury box under a vow to uphold truth and justice. County officers praise local governance, note a thriving pauper farm and good bridges, and announce plans for the new Dawson Appeal newspaper on the 15th. Deaths include Terrell Ragan of Bronwood, while railroad and church matters and local travels fill the town’s week with activity and concern.
The note outlines a property under dower and mortgage, sold for cash. J W Brown has constructed one of the town’s coziest cottages, reflecting good taste in design. Mr James Thornton of this county married Miss Mattie Mansfeld of Calhoun county last month. Congratulations to both couples.

The column also mocks opponents to ALP rail grading, praises favorable rains for corn and cotton, and features local gossip about Lumpkin’s magnetic girls and a New Orleans lottery notice while reporting on Gen Grant’s visiting condition and a dubious explorer tale.
The first bale of the new cotton crop sold at the Cotton Exchange in Savannah for 10 cents per pound. Primus W. Jones, Wright, Davis & Co of Albany, bid the bale. The Savannah Exchange committee judged it as good ordinary, though discolored from immature green. Also notes a remarkable iron Japanese toy dragon and an iron eagle in museums, highlighting master artisans of old Japan.
