A sensational dispatch from Birdseye Indiana reports a mob of about thirty men tied Mia Harmon to a post and whipped her naked body with hickory switches, leaving fatal wounds. They looted wagons and hid goods in dense woods, aiming to move the loot to St Joseph or Kansas City after the raid. Vigilants pursued the raiders as authorities prepared for possible court action.
Monte, Sept 26. Police Officer John King died from poisoning after a bite by what is known as a blue gum. Four years earlier King arrested a negro, Richard Richards, in a struggle which tore his hand and led to a fever and swelling that disabled him for months. King, once strong and popular, never regained full use of his limb and died, with the court's view cited as evidence the bite caused the fatal infection.
