Death of Georgia Senator Thomas E. Watson in Maryland

Thomas E. Watson, junior senator from Georgia, died at his Chevy Chase home after a severe asthma attack. He had battled intermittent illness for 16 years and had recently attended the Senate’s final days despite orders. His death opens a bid for his seat with Governor Hardwick favored to appoint a successor until November elections, amid mounting political maneuvering and speculation about W. C. Vereen as a potential appointee.

Notable Georgia Politician Watson’s Long Career and Works

Born near Thomson on September 5 1856 Watson rose from teaching in Screven to law practice then politics. He served in the Georgia Legislature, fought for anti jute bagging, supported farmers, backed eight hour work law, and led free rural mail delivery. He wrote Life and Times of Jefferson and Jackson and launched Jeffersonian publications. He won the 1920 US Senate nomination amid broad opposition. Watson published The Columbia Sentinel in Harlem, Ga.
