Chinese conflict widens as General Pei Fu launches a new offensive against General Lu Lung Hsiang west of Shanghai. Reports say troops progress while Kiangsu forces strike back, with fighting restarting after a brief pause caused by heavy rains.
Chicago reports Judge John R. Caverly imposes life terms on Leopold Jr. and Richard Loeb for the Franks murder, noting youth influenced the decision. Each also receives a 99 year sentence. Sheriff Hoffman says anonymous threats warned of an ambush for the prisoners and escort, plans kept secret.
Rev Bascom Anthony, D D presiding elder of the Savannah district, denounces Defense Day aims in a Savannah Ashby Memorial sermon. He calls for a peace day to abolish war and opposes national mobilization urging greater public discussion and civilian mind toward war. He notes monuments honor soldiers yet advocates abolition of war.
In Columbia South Carolina on September 10 with 42 of 1354 boxes uncounted Cole L Blease former governor maintained a 2000 vote lead over Representative James L Byrnes for the Democratic nomination for United States Senator after yesterday's run over primary tally showed Blease 97682 Byrnes 95954 and 42 precincts still to report.
Detroit September report indicates Senator James Couzens appears chosen by Michigan Republicans to seek another term with about a 20 000 vote lead as two thirds of state precincts reported.
Mayor Poole called a mass meeting for Thursday night at city hall to discuss the wood block paving problem in Americus. City Engineer Wheatley is preparing a report with outstanding municipal obligations and seeking constructive citizen suggestions to improve traffic flow and curb frequent repairs.
Unconfirmed reports say a cyclone struck near Oakdale and Rockwood Tennessee causing heavy property damage and possible loss of life. Communications to Chattanooga were disrupted as Western Union wires were down across upper east Tennessee.
Albany Chamber of Commerce reports continued results from its scout car tour in northern states led by secretary-manager R E L Niel. Miss Hattie Hardy, assistant secretary, received a letter from James E Perrin of Cumberland Maryland seeking pecan industry information and to be connected with Albany pecan wholesalers.
A light vote is reported in the day’s primary at the Americas polling place with just over five hundred ballots cast by afternoon. Countywide similar conditions noted as supporters of opposing candidates work at polls using vest pocket ballots. One observer says many voters arrive preselected, making foretelling the outcome of contested races difficult.

In Hazelhurst on Sept. 10 the revival at the Methodist church drew large crowds. Pastor Rev. T. W. Tinley preached while Prof. T. A. Peavy led music. The meeting began on the fifth Sunday in August and continued through the first Sunday in September with record attendance credited to the event.
Georgia voters flocked to polls in the Democratic primary to choose candidates for state and county offices. The statewide turnout appeared light as thousands gathered across cities and counties while campaigns highlight Senator Harris seeking reelection and a contest with Senator Hartwick for the Senate seat.
Mrs. Frank P. Harrold, president general of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, reports overseas U D C activities. A bronze bust of General Robert E. Lee was presented to Sandhurst Royal Military College in England with Ambassador and Lady Astor in attendance. A similar bust was given to Saint-Cyr in France, said to be the only Confederate General bust in all of France. Frederick Volek designed the bust, unveiled by Lewis Bennett with remarks by Mrs. Livingston Rowe Schuyler, a former U D C leader.
Washington hosts the world flyers as Major General Patrick delays departure until Defense Day and plans to have them participate in the capital exercises. A mishap forced the New Orleans plane to divert near Baltimore, leaving two others to proceed to Washington amid a tumultuous crowd.
Henry Johnson, jailed in Fulton County for robbery and sentenced to fifteen years in 1916, received a commutation in early September but escaped from Banks County confinement. A hall county alert is issued to withhold the order and revoke the commutation, to be reissued once recaptured, restoring the original fifteen year term.

A good crowd of Americas residents heard the Vaughan Quartette Tuesday night in concert at the Courthouse. The event, under the auspices of Central Baptist Church ladies, featured ton ingly entertaining numbers introduced by Chief J. Bragg and community organizer efforts.
