Washington dispatches reveal Special Agent Byrnay reported attempted bribes by importers to protect sugar officials at the New York customhouse. The inquiry, led by Secretary Carlisle, probes Sherer and associates and questions over how the sugar room will be handled under the new law.
New York dispatch reports William L. Wilson, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, boarded the American liner Paris to sail for Southampton and then Teauton to recover from the strain of recent congressional labors.

The Gloucester schooner Rigel arrived in port with the survivors of the ill fated Miranda which left New York July 7 carrying Dr Cook s arctic expedition. A relief party from Sukkar Toppan reached Holaten berg after a five day open boat voyage. The Miranda later sank after a burst ballast tank, with the crew transferring to the Rigel for the return voyage.
Returns from 105 towns show Woodbury Republican with 21 804 votes, Smith Democrat 8 807, McGinnia Populist 203, others 180. Woodbury's plurality 14 097, majority over all 14 245. In 1890 Page Republican 16 000, Brigham Democrat 9 267, others 34. Projections suggest a majority surpassing any in 20 years and a largely Republican general assembly, with 95 Republicans, two Democrats, one citizen candidate reported. A burglar broke into an Atlanta physician’s office, shot the doctor during a confrontation, and fled. A duel or ensuing struggle followed as the assailant attempted to escape. Police and bystanders aided, but the physician likely died from his wounds as authorities investigated the botched crime across Durand’s area. Local reports place the incident around early September with ongoing pursuit.
