Born September 9, 1846 in Coweta County, he served in the 56th Georgia Infantry during the Civil War, graduated from the University of Virginia law school in 1870, practiced in Newnan until 1894, then moved to Atlanta to form the firm Dorsey, Brewster and Howell with Julius T. Dorsey and Albert Howell Jr.
