The Associated Press reports initial government gains in Manchuria allow the Central army to position headquarters near Shanhaikwan. Massed Manchurian troops are described as a past danger. Jap destroyers are ordered from Port Arthur to guard Japanese residents near Shanhaikwan amid fighting.
A Tientsin dispatch says Chang Tso Lin’s Manchurian troops recaptured Chiaoshansu near Shanhaikwan after fierce resistance by central government forces. Casualties include the reported death of Chang Chi Kung. Troops advance toward Hai Yang as Tokyo reportedly weighs sending forces to Chin wangtao.
Democratic candidate John W. Davis campaigns in Indiana promising victory for his party. He arrives in Vincennes for a speech and plans to speak in Evansville that evening as he presses his final days in the state.
Washington October 22 The Democratic National Committee released a statement by Herbert Parsons former New York County Republican committee member announcing he would vote for John W. Davis. Parsons argued Davis offers the only path to continued world peace and urged voters to replace a party he calls dishonest.
DETROIT Fich Oct 22 Police used tear gas and pepper spray to disperse a mob estimated at 7000 to 10000 in front of Arena Gardens auditorium. Aldrish Blake former Oklahoma governor aide spoke on the Ku Klux Kraze. Police said the crowd included Ku Klux Klan sympathizers. One unidentifed man was struck by a bomb. Blake spoke afterward describing klan members as dismissed by their traders. A group left the hall during the address.
Col. John G. Emery former national commander of the American Legion was shot and slightly wounded in his Grand Rapids office. The shooter, Cagedell Simpson husband of Emerys stenographer, is charged with the crime. A divorce suit is pending against Simpson.
Mountain Landis baseball commissioner and Barney Dreyfuss Pirates owner, once at odds over the recent scandal probe, plan to meet at a testimonial dinner reserve board event in Pittsburg if Landis can cancel a prior engagement. The committee invited Landis as guest of honor and he said he would attend if the date could be moved.
Secretary Weeks urged in New York that November 4 ballots will either elect President Coolidge or be sent to Congress. He warned that a Bryan victory could come via a coalition of Democrats and “racial elements” in the Senate, portraying Coolidge as steady and honest.
Washington Oct 22 sub poenas were issued for William B Fox president of the American Bankers Association and for Charles D Hillis former Republican national chairman and George W Simmons a New York banker The probes are led by Frank P Walsh and Samuel Untermeyer as prosecutors in a charge that a Republican slush fund of ten to twelve million dollars is being raised.
Washington reports the Democratic National Committee holds $548 440 in hand toward an anticipated maximum campaign spend of $750 000. Expenses total $597 119 so far, with $461 801 paid and about $48 000 deficit projected unless more contributions arrive.
Voter turnout was low with only 140 ballots cast before two o clock in the municipal primary. Observers cited that only two incumbents faced opposition and managers expected fewer eligible voters to participate amid a quiet polling day.

San Diego October 22 The navy dirigible Shenandoah is moored at North Island awaiting a possible take off this afternoon eastbound for Fort Worth Texas with Lakehurst as a planned Saturday stop. Navigators report favorable weather along the southern air route and minor repairs needed before return East after the California coast cruise from Camp Lewis Washington.
The Nichi Nichi English edition editorially urges M Hanihara's recall and return as Japan's ambassador to the United States. It calls his return a graceful act after the immigration upheaval and argues the immigration bill was hard on Japan but no reason to recall the ambassador then.
Cambridge Mass Oct 22 A capacity crowd of 51000 for the Harvard Dartmouth football game was assured as 4000 season ticket seats were snapped up with many fans still waiting in line.
Ensign William A Engmans of Flemington New Jersey was killed when his seaplane crashed in Pensacola Bay Florida late Monday night. The body was recovered. He was a pilot in the student class of 1921.
Montreal October 22 The Prince of Wales caught a chill while riding to the hounds at St Augustine and on medical advice postponed his departure from Montreal until tomorrow night. Officials said there is nothing serious in his condition. He spent the day in his hotel suite and met a few friends in the evening before retiring early.
Agnes Jewell Hardaman nine, daughter of Mr and Mrs L A Hardaman of Boaz, died in Gadsden late yesterday when playing in a pile of cotton the staple caved in on her. Her mother was away at the time.
New York Oct 22 The Ford Motor company produced 149 906 cars and trucks in the United States in September a gain of 0 58 percent and 9 653 more than in the same month of 1924 domestic output rose to 1 4129 kg an increase of 14 498 from the prior year Despite OCR glitches the item notes steady growth in Ford production for the month and a higher domestic output compared with September last year.
London October 22 The long running Liberal Conservative feud grows more heated among extremists despite Liberal leader Asquith endorsing pacts to avoid three cornered races. Distrust spreads as both sides weigh arrangements where rivals stand aside to block Labor gains.
Canton Georgia October 22 A political frame-up is alleged by Lee Spear 25 the Cherokee county sheriff nominee charged with assault and battery against a 13 year old girl He is free on 500 bond with D T Smith his running mate running as an independent Spear reportedly offered a ride home after a movie and the girl told her parents of the alleged attack no violence indicators were noted
Washington October 22 The Interstate Commerce Commission denied the petition of the Southeastern Express Co The company had sought to set aside an orders requiring reconstruction of express rates in zone number 2 The ruling stops the company from altering its rate structure in that zone and upholds the commission order.
The government's suit to cancel the Elkhills naval reserve oil lease granted to the E. L. Doheny interests opened in federal court led by Judge J. McCormack. The amended complaint accuses Albert B. Fall and E. L. Doheny of conspiracy involving a payment allegedly influencing the lease, with Doheny valuing profits up to 100 million dollars.
Norfolk reports four additional deaths from the Trenton explosion raising the toll to twelve. Six turret crew members survived, four remain in critical condition. Names and home towns of the dead include Melvin Franklin Brooklyn and Joseph Cohen New York City. Navy orders three ordnance bureau experts to Norfolk to probe the blast likely caused by a friction spark as a powder charge exploded during hoisting. Lieutenant Sedgwick and Ensign Drexler praised for heroism. Drexler died aiding others.
Am ericus Rotary directors cancel Thursday's Ladies Night at the country club following the death of Mrs. Ch FE Allison, wife of Rotarian Allison. The club will meet Thursday at 1:00 pm for a brief lunch and urgent business only, and members plan to attend Mrs. Allison's funeral.
