On October 16 William Rose faced execution at dawn. He spoke of innocence and accused a man named Stover. The first trap failed, rope breaking three feet from the neck, then a second noose was used for a slow strangulation, with the trap sprung again at five o'clock.
A New York Surrogate hearing begins for the will of Anna Cora Ross, with her relatives challenging her competence. The dispute centers on Ross's alleged peculiarities and a supposed desire to marry Lan Ping. Separate dispatches report a rail wreck near Mingo Junction with fatalities, a depot fire in Georgia, and various condensed news notes from October 16 including political, legal, and crime items across several states.
London dock district blaze traps residents on upper floors after stairs burn away. Firemen reach top of the charred building to recover an elderly woman aged 70, a young woman, and three children all suffocated in the smoke while attempting to escape. The Atlantea, a new navy vessel from New York, rode out a fierce gale near the Delaware breakwater after leaving for Assatenue Showle. Fire from a naptha pump and gas ignited injuring several crew with burns while the ship weathered heavy seas on Monday night and entered the breakwater Wednesday morning. Captain John W. Phillips praised the ship’s performance and its seaworthiness. Also noted is the opening of a District Conference of the Woman's Missionary Society at the M. B. Church on Lee Street with strong attendance and speeches emphasizing the Society’s aims.
About 150 editors and owners from Wisconsin, led by President Heggi, visited Atlanta for a long weekend outing. They traveled from Chicago at 8:20 PM and arrived late this afternoon, planning to stay through tonight and tomorrow.
An inmate named William Carden escaped from a Cleveland Tennessee jail using a brick and a broom handle. An elderly former schoolteacher, he had been under a death sentence for allegedly assaulting a preacher's young daughter two years earlier. He had previously escaped once before and was recaptured. the case was reviewed by the state supreme court which upheld the lower court’s death sentence.
