In Statesboro Georgia on October 16 Fred Hendrix a Black man jailed for theft of cotton tried to flee while two county officers Brannen and Kennedy escorted him toward the chain gang. After several warnings and gunfire Hendrix was killed when the officers fired straight at him eight miles from town. He had been sent to the gang for stealing cotton.
