Fall in New York Cuba trade hurts steamship lines
Waydell of Waydull & Co. in New York tallies a sharp drop in Cuba trade since the insurrection. He notes major lines like Wilson Wardell Munson and Spee reduced sailings from about 15 ships a month to fewer, with six vessels withdrawn. He cites lost confidence, scarce cash, and paused Cuban factories as the cause, estimating over $1,000,000 monthly decline.

Sheriffs Murder Near Sylvania After Political Feud
In Sylvania Georgia on October 14 Sheriff L B Brooker was shot and killed near Golod by Ot and Callie Zeigler. The Zeiglers fired as the sheriff walked to his buggy ending his six year term and leaving a wife and six children. The killing arose from a year long quarrel over politics between the Zeigler family and Brooker, a Democrat, amid a Baptist association meeting in session at Golod. A prior shooting of a negro allied to the feud had occurred six months earlier. The brothers fled toward their home after the attack.
