At Camp Wheeler near Huntsville Alabama on October 1 a shooting incident involving the Tenth Cavalry left one soldier dead and several wounded after an attempt to free an arrested comrade. Corporal McLaughlin was killed and Privates Miles and Larkin seriously wounded in the unrest.
Spanish garrison at Manzanillo Cuba departed at daybreak aboard the Porto Rico bound for Cienfuegos as Colonel Ray the American commander paid a final visit to Colonel Parton. American soldiers marched to the public square and hoisted the stars and stripes and then the customhouse and post office ensigns. Incumbents likely to remain until General Wood arrives.
Knoxville dispatch reports paymasters arriving at Camp Poland with nearly 200000 dollars to be paid during the week. General Randall plans no large provost guard increase, troops are well behaved, and a general inspection is slated for the week. Private H M Dodson of the Fourth Tennessee regiment is court martialed for striking an officer, dishonorably discharged, and sentenced to three months in prison.
Washington reports from Oct 11 indicate a steady rise in yellow fever in the south with Mississippi tallying 470 cases and 81 deaths since the outbreak. New cases include Jackson 3 Canton 4 Crystal Springs 4 Madison 4 Harriston 14 Ridgeland 6 Orwood 6 and Oxford 1 with one death. Avondale near New Orleans opens a fever detention point housing about 1,000 patients.
New Orleans October 11 reports the Illinois Central railroad losing about $15,000 daily on southern business due to strict yellow fever quarantine. Yazoo and Mississippi Valley division is tied up and main line traffic is disrupted with most passenger trains halted except the double through vestibule service. Other railroads entering New Orleans face similar constraints as crews must relay or relocate outside infected zones. The Southern Pacific cannot evacuate passengers from New Orleans to local or California points, Texas bars through passengers, and Louisville and Nashville runs only one through train daily versus ten before. Through trains to Cincinnati and New York see cars pass through Alabama and Mississippi. all passenger coaches are locked after leaving the depot until cleared.
General Fitzhugh with Seventh Army Corps lands in Savannah to establish headquarters at the DeSoto hotel. Officers briefed, and avowed a camp site near Avondale tract as Mayor Meldrim and Alderman Guckenheimer tour the area. Troops then ordered from Jacksonville to Savannah. Nearby Birmingham plans to muster out Mississippi regiments due to yellow fever, with 2600 soldiers to move. Macon carnival opens to mark the city’s diamond jubilee with a large southern turnout.
In Canton Ohio on October 10 President and Mrs. McKinley stayed at the Barber House meeting only close kin. Private funeral services were held for George Saxton at 3 pm. The president joined the cabinet en route to Omaha at 9:47 pm with his private car on a special train. Mrs. McKinley will remain a few days. A note dated Springfield Ohio claims a killer in a man’s garb. The coroner’s witness list grows. Mrs. George pleads not guilty. preliminary hearing set for Tuesday at 10.00.
Washington officials depart by two trains to attend the Omaha exposition with routes via the Pennsylvania and Baltimore and Ohio railroads. One train carries President McKinley and the other carries General Miles, army officers, diplomats, and press as they head toward Chicago to meet near the others. A separate note records Del Norte lowering the mile world record to 2:04 4.

In Atlanta on October 8 a superior court hearing opened over the will of the late Dr F D Thurman valued at about $100000. The will left Mrs Thurman a life estate with the bulk of the estate passing to Florence A Underwood a cousin and contesting plaintiff who claims undue influence and lack of soundness. The case began before Ordinary Hulsey and concerns Dr Thurmans purported belief in dying machines.
General F D Grant plans to attend the Army of Tennessee reunion in this city on October 26 and 27. He will be accounted for by his mother Mrs T Grant. General Kilbourne will be a guest of honor.
