In San Francisco Oct 7 William Greer Harrison author of Runnymede returns home to explain why his play failed with New York critics. He argues New Yorkers crave variety and laughs, not culture, and the Boteman club proves San Francisco’s refined taste. He blames critics for misunderstanding the play and notes New Yorkers’ fixation on turning profits over refinement.
A dispatch from Potlatch Idaho reports United States Army scout J W Wilson learned that Captain Smith and two companions were ambushed and killed by Indians on the south fork of the Snake River near Jackson Hole. The bodies were left on the river bar. Wilson notified Captain Collis at Swan Valley and troops moved to the scene. He then traveled to Idaho Falls with dispatches.
A Birmingham despatch reports Sam Childress, aged 24, fatally shot after threatening his displaced sweetheart Sallie Thomas near a church. Childress confronted the couple, wounded a rival, and attempted to stab Sallie before deputies captured him at a barbed wire fence. He died overnight in the city.
The North Atlantic Squadron will sail from Chesapeake Bay in a few days to resume large scale maneuvers with Maine and Texas possibly Indiana joining. Admiral Bancroft will have wide liberty to conduct winter operations as the navy tests new fleet tactics for the first time in a modern force.
Thirty three African Americans arrived in Birmingham after a year with a Mexico colonization scheme. They disembarked at the depot, were poorly clothed, had dry bread and blankets, bore smallpox marks, and express desire to return home to Tuscaloosa and Green counties. Tuscaloosa residents vow to bar their settlement, claiming many were troublesome.
Justice Hagner delivered Supreme Court of the District of Columbia ruling that the government holds sovereign title to lands along the Potomac river within the District. In a Scribner's dock riot over boat loading a man was killed and another mortally wounded among Tonawanda boatmen. Lips, owner of the boats, was shot in the head and died soon after. Captain Phillips had moved boats from Buffalo seeking to load out of turn, sparking the confrontation and ensuing gunfire.
