Fire kills three in Hudson and Dominick blaze

A five story brick tenement fire at Hudson and Dominick streets claimed three lives Mrs Annie Murphy 82 dressmaker Kate Dunn 22 and Josephine Ryan 5 a Washington DC girl. Two others Martin Toohey 11 and John Toohey 9 were severely injured with one later declared fatal. Firemen rescued panicked residents using the stairs and fire escape as a box maker Matthew Ryan and his children were saved. Matthew Murphy a fireman found his wife among the casualties and cried for his own family. The incident prompted a rapid firefighting response and widespread shock across the city.
