Destructive West India hurricane hits Florida wiping Cedar Keys from maps. Town of 1600 faces vast death toll with 20 corpses found and many missing. Sponging vessels sunk, bridges destroyed, and property losses widespread as Levy and Alachua counties report heavy destruction and destitution.
Reports describe drowning deaths and widespread destruction from storms and floods. In Cedar Key Florida five people died at Mrs Weidley’s house including three children, with many vessels lost and wharves washed away. North Carolina power damage includes a fatal hurricane and a tobacco house loss valued at over fifty thousand dollars. The Georgia Supreme Court reverses a prior ruling on town charters, restoring Pinehurst and others deemed valid.
