Horrific Smithville Fire Kills Jail Prisoner

A negro prisoner, John Higgins, died in a Smithville city calaboose fire that engulfed the jail. Higgins had been held on burglary charges and faced a transporting trip to Leesburg. Firefighters found the remains severely burned, and authorities suspect Higgins may have set the blaze to avoid confession.
