In Memphis Tennessee a change in postmaster will occur soon after a $12,200 shortage was found in the Post Office accounts. The investigation by the department led to the firing or reassignment of Armour’s agents, with the new appointee not yet chosen. A Senate inquiry and statements from Senator Harris affirm the exposure of the deficit and ongoing personnel changes. Meanwhile in Missouri a seven year old boy is attacked by a bear while playing near White River, tearing the younger child.
The Secretary of War denies a published claim that the Fourth New Jersey militia was ordered toFlorida service and that similar orders were issued to militias in other states. He says no militia orders exist and the supposed mobilization relates to routine annual notices, not a Cuban or Spanish threat. The president can mobilize only in foreign invasion or domestic rebellion, with governors handling local insurrections.
Inland dispatches say B Pendleton Florida newspaper man and Equator Democrat owner from Key West was detained by Spanish authorities aboard a Morgan Line steamer near Havana as he prepared to sail to Key West. Congressman Cooper of Florida awaits confirmation and action to safeguard Pendleton’s rights. A separate note from South Dakota reports a fresh blizzard with drifts six feet deep halting rail traffic and causing stock losses. Slaves Adopt the Kansas Kan session adjourns with Kan adoption of a pension measure highlighting race era issues.
A fire at Jackson county jail in Missouri at 3:00 am endangered 168 inmates. Fire department response kept the structure from being destroyed, with damage around 4,000. Panic spread among male and female prisoners, many of whom were Black women on the upper tier.
In Tuskeges Tuskeeke Als on Nov 28 Henry Dawson a 200 pound Black man was hanged for murder. He reportedly died within minutes but a claim by Reuben Rice says the coffin lid was opened outside town revived him with whisky and restoratives. Women in charge allegedly left the area and no fresh grave could be found at the Buchanan place.
A spirited letter from D. R. Francis secretary of the interior stirred gold standard Democrats after a banquet celebrating free silver defeat. He warned that unchecked wealth and trusts threaten institutions and urged legislation to curb their influence before century's end.
