New York cotton opened at 34.60 cents per pound, up 70 points to a new high for the season. The surge in the New York contract market boosted spot values, with strict middling at 33 cents by close. Large buyers from cotton houses in Americus were active, with several good sales under negotiation early today.

Jeffersonville plans to end a severe water drought after artesian well failure last spring. A new well will be drilled soon and a drilling company has materials ready to start. A pipeline to nearby springs was laid, but spring supplies proved insufficient for the town.

Augusta, Nov. 16. James P Verdery, 70, a retired lawyer and noted cotton goods manufacturer, died Thursday afternoon after a long illness. He was a prominent Augusta citizen and formerly president of the Enterprise Manufacturing Company, which he left in 1917 due to ill health.
