Citizens of Americas eye the aldermanic election with a three week to primary date of December 4. Candidates are already in or expected to join, and business leaders discuss a mass friendly slate of three to back in the primary. The talk reflects wary, heated city politics as residents debate the field and future leadership.
Washington, D. C. Nov. 13. The trial of Mrs. Ann Bradley for the murder of ex-Senator Brown goes over until tomorrow. The jury selection consumed much time with many jurors challenged. Charles H. Wilcox, a former Georgian, declared prejudice against hanging a woman. Several Negroes were on the jury list but none chosen. One man was excused because he was from the same county as the District Attorney.
Military plans reallocate companies as the Fourth Regiment dissolves. Americas Light Infantry becomes Company L within a battalion headquartered in Columbus under Maj. J C Court. Remaining seven Fourth Regiment companies form another battalion with Thomasville Fitzgerald and Valdosta units under a yet to be elected major.
The Americus community learned with regret of Edward A. Tondee’s death in Washington City two or three days earlier. Reared in Hilaville, he long resided in Americus and was connected with the typographical department of the Times-Dispatch in Westone. His passing ends a long association with local life.
Ed Waites was found this morning in an empty Monticello gambling house with his head shot off. Authorities believe he killed himself.
L. C. Joiner, former representative of Pacific Mutual Insurance Co. in Americus, was brought to this county from Ellaville in custody of Sheriff Lumpkin. He faces forgery charges based on notes given for insurance. Warrants were issued in the City Court before Judge Crisp and bond set at $500. failing to post bond, Joiner was held overnight by Sheriff Bell.
Judge A L Miller won a sweeping Macon mayoral nomination with broad support in Americus where he is well known. The Miller ticket likely carried aldermen as well, signaling control of the council. Miller addressed an enthusiastic crowd at the auditorium vowing public service over personal gain and denouncing entrenched interests.
Mr Henry Reid, son of Mrs Catherine Reid, married Miss Cassie Dees at the bride’s father’s home last Sunday morning. Rev A B Hawkes of Shiloh Baptist church officiated. A wedding dinner followed at the groom’s mother's home with many friends in attendance.
Mead Chamber of Commerce reports Asa G Chandler has been nominated for president of the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce as of November 12.
Mrs B D Sherold returned from Albany after visiting her ill mother Mrs Wallace W Bacon. The funeral was held Monday afternoon for Mrs Bacon, a devout Albany resident known for Christian fortitude and her care for the sick, regarded by many as a good Samaritan.
Americus Baptists prepare for the annual State Bible Convention travel from Georgia churches to Valdosta next week. Americus churches will be represented along with others from the area. The convention agenda includes missionary work funds and Christian service topics at Mercer.
Telegrams received here yesterday announced the death in Tennessee of Mr. T. B. Klutz a well known and a former citizen of Americus He helped supervise the erection of the post office building and other handsome structures in the city He married a niece of the late I P Boone who survives him
