Captain Sigsbee First to Receive Prize Money

We report Captain Sigsbee will be the first navy officer to draw prize money from the war with Spain. The loss of the Beatormel cargo was appraised at 13 000 dollars, with half to the government and half to the officers and crew. Sigsbee’s share will be the maximum allowed for a commanding officer. The prize funds from other actions are being adjudicated and will be paid in coming weeks.

Atlanta Peace Jubilee Accepts McKinley Plan Dec Festivities

Atlanta notices President McKinley approves the peace jubilee program for December 1 and 15 with a state visit and grand events. The president will be greeted by the governor and legislature, attend a reception, banquet at Capital City club, and review a 30,000-strong parade before a public address. Several high officials and generals have sent formal acceptances, and railroads offer reduced Jubilee week rates. Fugitive Publisher at Asbury Park Escapes Mob

W A Le Manley editor of the Wilmington Record fled Wilmington to Asbury Park after his office was burned by white citizens amid riots sparked by a misquoted Record editorial. He says he cannot discuss details to protect others and claims the inflammation grew from misquotation fed to white voters for political aims. He also notes personal losses and uncertainty about returning to North Carolina.

Naval Lieutenant Dresel Dies by Self Inflicted Shot

Lieutenant Herman G. Dresel of the United States Navy ended his life in the Carrollton hotel, allegedly due to orders to Manila to join the USS Zafiro. He locked himself in the restroom and fired a pistol, leaving a note and a telegram seeking order exchanges. Dresel, 38 or 40, known at the navy pay office, had no known troubles and had recently been transferred from the Essex to Manila. The incident follows his refusal to go overseas and a career spanning from Annapolis appointment in 1876 to lieutenant in 1896.
