Naval Lieutenant Dresel Dies by Self Inflicted Shot
Lieutenant Herman G. Dresel of the United States Navy ended his life in the Carrollton hotel, allegedly due to orders to Manila to join the USS Zafiro. He locked himself in the restroom and fired a pistol, leaving a note and a telegram seeking order exchanges. Dresel, 38 or 40, known at the navy pay office, had no known troubles and had recently been transferred from the Essex to Manila. The incident follows his refusal to go overseas and a career spanning from Annapolis appointment in 1876 to lieutenant in 1896.
