British Commander Reports A Skirmish In South Africa

Schooner William Bird Wreck Claims Ten Lives in October Gale

News from Pamapmyma reports the Philadelphia schooner William Bird sailing from Charleston to New London wrecked off Frying Pan Shoals during October hurricane. Ten crew including Captain Barrett perished. Two survivors, mate George Lond and seaman George Robinson, were rescued by Samuel T. Beacham near the Jing Pan lightship. Survivors endured nine hours without food or water and some chewed leather to stay alive. The William Bird, 763 tons, built Camden NJ, carrying lumber, cleared Charleston Oct 29 with only two survivors.

Regular Army Vacancies Asks McKinley to Promote Civil War Veterans
