Detectives recovered 150000 to 175000 dollars worth of jewels stolen in a New Orleans hotel from Henry Agert of New York and arrested Mortimer on receiving stolen goods and Allies, a pawnbroker, who is barge William Jacobs. Two other suspects and a woman are being sought as the case ties to a 1922 hotel robbery.
Arrangements completed for the Poppy Day drive to be conducted Armistice Day nationwide. Robert C. Lane chairs the poppy sale committee and has named young ladies as group captains. Women and girls are urged to report to Rylander Shoe company at 8:30 Tuesday morning to help support veterans through the annual sale.
In White County the general election ballots show two city court offices filled by W. W. H. Underwood and Thomas F. Underwood while the separate question to create or maintain the City Court was defeated. Official totals: Judge City Court 429 votes, Solicitor City Court 437 votes, For City Court 187 votes, Against City Court 437 votes. Thus both elected officials have no office to serve.
Unusually favorable weather in late October raises the 1924 cotton crop forecast by 141000 bales. The Agriculture Department now projects 12816000 bales, while the census bureau reports 9694920 ginned before November. Southeasterly states expect mostly fair weather with near normal temperatures next week.
In Philadelphia a running clash along the waterfront ends with police seizing five hundred cases of liquor. Pistols fired as fifteen men attempt to unload a shipment from Rum-Row. The raiders fled by boat and remain at large.

A. C. Potter arrived in town with several large carp dangling from his ear to prove strong carp fishing in the Flint River. A crowd gathered at the court house to view the humorous catch. One fish weighed over 20 pounds and about a dozen others averaged around 10 pounds each. Potter declared the river clear and conditions ideal for carp fishing.
In Washington reports James E. Watson of Indiana and James Thomas Heflin of Alabama emerge as the campaign’s loudest speakers. Both men are tall, heavyset figures who symbolize the era’s big men in rural districts. The piece notes Watson as the stronger orator and recounts a Senate exchange where Watson challenged Heflin’s yield and cited the 7,000,000 vote margin against the Republican party. President Coolidge has accepted an invitation from Louisiana business men to visit New Orleans and likely two other cities in the state, announced Friday by Emile Kuntz Republican national committeeman from Louisiana.
President Coolidge announced a 10 member commission to investigate agricultural conditions. Robert D. Carey of Careyhurst Wyoming will chair. Members include C. E. Bradfute of Chicago, Charles S. Barrett of Union City Georgia, Louis J. Taber of Columbus Ohio, Ralph P. Merritt of Fresno California, W G Coffey of Minnesota, and others. Appointments may continue before the panel meets.
Huguo Bubsch of Cocoa Nut Grove is abducted from his drug store by masked men claiming kinship with French author Victor Hugo. Two cars drove to the rear of the store, his wife was menaced with a revolver, and Bubsch was beaten with a strap before being found unconscious on his doorstep and rushed to a Miami hospital in serious condition.
Frank McDowell, serving a life term for the deaths of his mother and two sisters, is reported by Florida prison physician Dr. J L Chalker to be steadily deteriorating mentally. He has been observed for three weeks and requires mechanical restraint to prevent violence. McDowell confessed to killing his family in Georgia and later in Florida, with a Pinellas County jury sentencing him to life after a mercy recommendation.
In Fulton superior court Atlanta on Friday afternoon W P McClain was found not guilty of killing Theodore Owens at the Southeastern fair grounds on October 2. The jury took under 15 minutes to reach its verdict as the widow of Owens, mourning in court, watched the proceedings and showed visible grief.

Lieutentant Smith and Arnold, army round the world fliers, arrived in Belleville from Dallas at 4 p m Friday, covering the distance in six hours and fifty minutes. They plan to resume the flight east next Friday and will be joined here by Lieutenants Wade and Nelson en route to New Orleans.
