Shorter Steel Day Declared Impossible by Industry Report

A committee from the Iron and Steel Institute said shortening the 12 hour day would raise costs and require over 60,000 more workers, creating a labor shortage under current conditions. The panel found 12 hours a day would not harm workers and urged looser emigration restrictions.

John Allen Davis Dies at Home Near Plains

John Allen Davis, 37, died at his parents dwelling in the 17th district after a brief illness. Funeral at Hebron Baptist church with Rev J E O Quinn officiating, burial in church cemetery. Survived by parents, two brothers Eugene of Charlotte NC and Hiram of Sumter County, and sister Jennie Mae. A World War veteran who sustained gas injuries, he lived at home farming with his father and was cherished in the community for his devout Christian character.

Marshall Calls Off Hog Sale at Plains

The Plains hog sale slated for Tuesday June 5 is postponed by George O. Marshall county farm demonstration agent due to uncertain market conditions and farmers inability to prepare hogs. A minimum of three cars was planned and a weeks-long postponement is expected to yield profits for participating farmers.

New Teachers Named at Anco y Hill School

Americus board of education named McCoy Hill public school teachers for next year. Outgoing teachers Geraldine Hilson Blanche Staley and Ozie Belle Turney were replaced by Jimie Russell Mary Wallace and Lucille Womack. Pauline Calhoun did not apply for re election. no successor named yet. Other faculty members were re elected. Two home economics positions and three supply posts remain open. The school sustains a 21 teacher complement during peak season with some seasonal staffing.

Fifteen Executed in Georgia Counter-Revolution Plot

A Tiflis dispatch reports fifteen princes generals and noblemen have been executed in the Soviet Republic of Georgia following exposure of a counter revolutionary plot. The targets included leaders from five non Bolshevik parties who planned a September uprising aided by bandit Chelokaeff.

Paris May 25 Premier Poincare and cabinet members offered resignations to President Millerand after the senate refused to proceed with trials of Communists Cachin and allies. Poincare said the vote showed lack of confidence, leading to a brief ministers’ council and submission of resignations at the Elysee. The senate, voting 148 to 104, held the court not competent to hear the case and referred it to a competent body.

Commissioners Name New Officers and Rome Chosen Next Convention

The Georgia County Commissioners Association elected officers for the coming year at the Rylander Theater. Officers named include President Dr J H Hardy First Vice President M C B Holley Second Vice President Dr J H Heard and Third Vice President Rhodes Browne Rome was chosen as the next convention city with invitations to Rome Brunswick and Savannah. The body discussed prison health measures highway bond issues and membership efforts as the convention opened with Judge Moore presiding.
