May 24 Manerino Ohio Honorable Michael L. Harter argues for a revenue plan to raise income for the government. He proposes higher taxes on tobacco and beer and a modest per cup tax on tea and coffee to net about 90 million dollars in increased revenue, and urges fairness in tariff policy and free coinage opposition.
A New York political observer says Levi P Morton is the logical GOP candidate for president in 1896 with a solid New York delegation. He notes Morton’s governorship in 1894 and broad public support despite party lines. A Missouri court report details bank failure disclosures from the Boone County National Bank case and a witness's testimony about examination delays before the First National Bank collapse.

The Royal Arcanum announces in Savannah Georgia that its next supreme council will meet there in May 1896 with Pulaski Council noting Savannah as the site. The order, founded 1877, numbers 16 000 members and has paid out 30 000 000 to widows and orphans, including 81 000 at Savannah.
