Frightful Fire Destroys Armour & Co Lard Refinery in Chicago
A massive blaze at Armour & Co lard refinery in Chicago killed five and injured many more. The five story, 250 by 304 foot plant, recently completed, burned after three lard tanks exploded on the fifth floor. About 2,000 workers were inside at the time as flames quickly engulfed the building. The exact cause remains unknown though tanks exploded in unison, and a hog runway collapse caused numerous injuries as spectators sought a better view. The company losses are estimated between 750000 and 900000 dollars with the higher figure favored.
