Atlanta church homecoming to feature children reception

Americus Methodists plan a Wednesday homecoming at the unfinished church with afternoon events for primary and junior members and evening entertainment for adults. Mrs Evan Mathis leads the afternoon program with refreshments for children, while Mrs John T. Taylor chairs the evening program. Church music will be directed by Mrs Joe M Bryan and Miss Louise Marshall in a hopeful social gathering aimed at fellowship.

Cash Bonus Rules Limit Cash to Fifty Dollars

Washington May 20 Ex service men eligible for bonus payments will receive cash only if the amount is $50 or less. Otherwise the benefit is paid as paid up life insurance with cash loan values after two years and possible cash exchanges after twenty years. Average policies hover around $900 to $1,000. Applications due before January 1, 1928, cash distribution after March 1. Loans up to 90 percent of face value after two years. Service counted from April 5, 1917 to July 1, 1919 with enlistment before November 11, 1918. Women yeomen included. About 3,038,283 veterans eligible for policies, 389,585 for cash up to $50. Dependents of deceased veterans receive adjusted service compensation.

Dublin High to Graduate May 30th

Dublin May 20. Dublin High will graduate 51 seniors on May 30, one of the largest classes in school history. The class required two separate plays to accommodate all participants. First honor goes to Margaret Burgess with a 96.9 average across five subjects. Mary Radford close behind with 96.17.

Curran Death Shocks Americus Family In Atlanta

Mrs J C Curran 46 longtime Americus resident died at St Josephs Infirmary Atlanta after months of illness. Wife of J C Curran she leaves five sons Clyde Jack Henry Edgar Buddy and five sisters and two brothers. Funeral from Curran residence on Drewry Street with burial in local cemetery set for Wednesday afternoon.

Phillips to teach science at Mercer University

A. B. Phillips has been selected to teach general science at Mercer University during the Macon summer school next month. The school offers courses for summer college work and license renewal, with expectations of large attendance. Prof. Phillips upcoming teaching assignment announced here today.

142 Persons Killed by Accident in 1923 Georgia

Atlanta May 20 During 1923 there were 142 persons killed in steam railroad accidents in Georgia, up from 92 in 1922, per the Georgia Public Service Commission annual report to Governor Walker. Fourteen deaths occurred in street railroad accidents in 1923, versus 15 in 1922. Deaths by steam railroads in 1923 include 1 passenger, 31 employes, and 110 other persons. 1922 figures were 5 passengers, 23 employes, and 64 other persons. Street railroad deaths involved no passengers or employes in either year.

SHNTHS ORDERS ALLEGEDLY OBEYED BY JUSTICE BUREAU

Senate Daugherty committee heard testimony that orders from Former Attorney General Daugherty were followed by the Justice Department Bureau. Lewis Bailey, former acting chief, said Daugherty delegated authority to Jess Smith who directed actions and was presumed to be acting for Daugherty.

Savannah May 20. Snap beans and cucumbers are marketed on the cooperative plan by farmers of Hahira vicinity with an average yield of 600 dollars per acre. It is estimated over 106 ears of vegetables will be shipped from this point within the next 60 days.

Mrs Mallet Named Butts County Tax Collector

Jackson May 20 Announce ment is made that Mrs Jane Ham Mallet has been appointed Butts county tax collector to fill the unexpired term of the late J Lane. She will receive her commission during the week. Mrs Mallet has years of experience in the offic e of the ordinary and tax collector. The term expires January first. She is among Georgia’s few women to hold the post.

SULLENS TO BE GUEST OF GYPSY SMITH CLUB

Fred Sullens owner and editor of the Jackson News will visit Savannah June 12 as guest of Gypsy Smith Jr Lay men's Evangelistic club. Sullens conversion occurred at a Gypsy Smith meeting in his hometown and he has since focused on laymen's work. The Savannah club, composed of leading business and professional men, has held weekly prayers downtown since November 1922 and has conducted over five thousand meetings in Savannah and south Georgia.

Shy Sworn In as Justice of Peace

J. M Shy was elected justice of the peace by a complimentary majority and received his commission. He was formally sworn in by Capt. Cobb and immediately assumed duties at the courthouse. Succeeding the late F. W. Griffin, the new official pledged impartial justice in all cases brought before him.

Poison the Weevil Plan from DeLoach Maness and Marshall

The plan urges immediate poisoning before squares form or as tiny forms appear, with a second poisoning five days after the first and a third five days after the second. Pick up squares after the second poisoning ahead of cultivation, and again when blooms appear before cultivation.
