Deed of a Devil in Crawford County Riotous Pursuit

A Crawford County Pittsburgh era news report describes Henry Jordan a 22 year old light mulatto who abducted and raped Mrs Jarrell at her husband’s plantation eight miles north of Fort Valley Georgia. He threatened with a knife and pistol and fled as armed white citizens hunted him through fields and woods. Runners spread the alarm and a large pursuit followed with sawmills idle and stores closed as residents vowed swift justice. Local men formed patrols and sent parties toward Macon in hopes of capturing the assailant before legal proceedings. The victim remained in precarious condition but the community pressed for immediate action.
