Griffin May 19 The death of Judson D. Cobb at his Washington home is mourned by friends in this section. Cobb, married to Miss Bessie Sims of Griffin, was longtime manager of the New Willard Hotel in Washington for fourteen years and had recently retired due to ill health.

Lanier hoboes sent to gang in Lowndes county

Two Lanier county men described as hoboes were brought to Valdosta and placed in the Lowndes county chain gang. They faced a $250 fine or twelve months, with payment enabling immediate labor. Lowndes leases Lanier misdemeanants since Lanier has no chain gang.

Allen acquitted on Mann Act charges in Pittsburg

Helen B. Allen was acquitted by a federal court jury in Pittsburg on a Mann Act indictment arising from a trip from Washington to Pittsburg with Gladith Allen, 16, one of his 57 adopted children. Government witness A. I. Moore testified to peeping into the drawing room where Allen and Gladith stayed. The defense said the girl threatened to retaliate after being punished for running away from a Sabot, Virginia school.

Hatchery Ends Seasons Run

Valdosta May 19 The Continental Hatchery closes for the season after a highly successful period. Though the usual end of the hatching season is early May, thousands of eggs were carried through. the last two thousand are being taken off now. Manager A J Bartlett reports the business fully satisfactory and expects next season to be taxed to capacity.

Two Milledgeville men, Wade Johnson and Garrett Benford, are jailed in Macon after allegedly attacking an 80 year old woman at her home three miles from Gray. Doctors report the victim in serious condition. The assault shocks Jones county as relatives and community figures react with concern.

Savannah stirred by attack on girl with posse seeks negro

Savannah police comb the city and county for a negro who attacked an eleven year old girl yesterday in the western part of the city. Several suspects were arrested but released after two boy witnesses said none of them were responsible. The girl and her two brothers were picking flowers near a cemetery when the assault occurred.

Honey Shipping Season Starts With Large Output

Millen May 19. Barney Lightfoot, a leading Jenkins County farmer, began shipping honey this week and will send about 2000 pounds weekly for the next several weeks. He plans to enlarge the apiary next season to become the area’s largest producer of quality honey. Prices are good and quality is excellent.

Dynamite attack case ties bootleg ring at Rome

Will Swent testified at a preliminary hearing in Rome accusing Frank Williams and Carl Lemaster, already serving Floyd County chain gang sentences, of dynamiting Deputy Sheriff John Bobo’s home on April 4. Swent described stealing 40 sticks of dynamite and hiding charges under a church loft. Officials expect a grand jury session to follow early next week.

Joy Riders End Ride in Jail Cell

In Chattanooga on May 19, Mildred Cantrell and Mil dred Dean from Georgia are held for questioning after a local man Lee Mayo 36 was found unconscious and died following a joy ride with the two girls and two men Roy Garwood and Robert Earl, both Rising Fawn residents, are in custody. Earl says no trouble occurred on the ride but Mayo was found unconscious with five puncture wounds. authorities continue inquiry.
