A dispatch from Pretoria notes arrests of former British officers Nicholls Patterson Tremlett Ellis Freie Hooper and Mitchell for high treason. Incriminating documents found on their persons amid tense security. Other reports recount a Huntington Ark clash where guards and strikers traded fire leaving one guard dead.
Havana May 16 The situation grows more alarming as insurgent troops claim they were misled by Americans and refuse to surrender arms for a paltry sum. General Gomez faces Brooke’s government clash while Cuban soldiers and officers report food shortages and strained loyalties amid plans for a militia and potential annexation fears.
Washington May 16 General Brooks reports no serious situation in Cuba and the war department sees no need for alarm. The policy aims to avoid provocation while ensuring no overt acts by Cuban disturbers, with U S control of the island to be sustained by Washington. Discontent among Cuban army “generals” stems from expected pay shares, delaying peaceful settlement.
Mayor Robert Van Wyck testified before the Mazer investigation committee in New York where he denied consulting with Richard Croker over city affairs and rejected allegations of financial interest in poolrooms. The inquiry adjourned for the day with hearings planned on schedule despite legislative tensions.
The tenth annual convention of the National Traveling Protective association opened in Library Hall Louisville at 10 am with 298 delegates and about 1500 visitors. The weeklong program includes banquets receptions and state tours as part of traveler amusements.
The seventh annual meeting of the National Reform Press association and the national reorganization committee of the People's party convened in Kansas City. Delegates discussed plans for 1900 while Wharton Barker of Philadelphia, the party's de facto candidate for president, was represented by his son Rodman Barker. Frank Burkitt of Mississippi presided. Committee members from multiple states including J M Adams, J H Wharton, Rose Winn, H F Jones, Milton Park, J A Parker, John W Rannelis, J E Clyde, Emmet Rom sowell, J E Reynolds, W L Peek, M A Bodenhamer, James M Perriss, Clinots, W S Morgan, Lucien Sliben, John W Burton, L Yeo man, Abe Steinberg, L H Well, and A Weeks were named.
At Lanxta on May 16 a Georgia plan by Commissioner O B Stevens may revive cotton by raising prices and easing producers burden. It envisions broad uniform cotton inspection across the state and aims to boost competition in purchase to lift prices.
