Gould Dies After Weeks of Illness in France

George Jay Gould, American financier and railroad leader, died at 3 a.m. in Mentone France after a long illness. He succeeded his father Jay Gould in the family leadership and faced loss from a second marriage that affected first wife Edith Kingdon's estate. He spent much time in Europe recuperating from bronchial trouble and pneumonia. Funeral plans were not announced, but interment in New York was probable.

Normal activity resumes in Hot Springs after cloudburst

Hot Springs May 16 The merchants reopened their doors today after crews labored overnight to clear wreckage and debris left by a mountain cloudburst that sent torrents through the streets as flames engulfed a block. Normal activity has largely returned.

Virginia Smith of Fort Valley awarded the D A R scholarship by the Colonial School for Girls in Washington. She will receive two years free training at the school in 1923 and 1924, honoring her and Georgia.

Stonewall Shirley Elected to State College Council

Americas relatives have been notified of the election of Stonewall Shirley of Plains a Third District Aggie school graduate to be a member of the Students council at the State College of Agriculture Athens. The council is the supreme ruling body for student conduct and government at the University of Georgia.

Sale of Giles lands by farm loan dept described oddly

An Atlanta broker named Charles Black was connected to a Giles sale as reported in the Times Recorder. The notice incorrectly referred to the Farm Loan Department, omitting the word farm, and stated Crocker as manager with Allison assisting. Middleton McDonald and the trust company’s loan department had no role in the sale.

Reports that fish are being dynamited in Little River along the Colquitt Cook county line are being investigated by the Colquitt county game and fish warden. Claimants say many small fish float on the stream surface as evidence.

J B Southerland delivered a strange three-legged chick to the Courier-Herald office. The one day old chick stood strong like a normal bird but had an extra leg extending where a tail feather would be. The hatchling, born at Southerland’s home, was shown today.

Captains Chosen for Squads at Alabama

At a joint meeting of Alabama baseball and track squads in Tuscaloosa the leaders for next year were chosen. Fishing Party Heads to St Marys from Valdosta

A group led by Mr and Mrs Guy McCulley and Mr and Mrs Harry Stump along with Mr and Mrs Bob Stump and Mr and Mrs Emory Bass left Valdosta on a fishing trip to St Marys. They plan to stay several days subsisting mainly on cornbread and hush puppy pies and fish.

Wealthy Negro Sought Gray Murder Warrant Issued

A warrant for murder was issued May 16 for Andrew Miller aged 30, son of Bibb Miller, a large landowner, in the death of his wife Leah. Stanley, her brother, obtained the warrant after Miller tried to bury her body without a burial permit.

Brunswick May 16 Miss Mary Louise Everett a charming young society woman was instantly killed when lightning struck the summer home of her father Willis M Everett on St Simons Island early Tuesday morning. Details reached her father in Atlanta by phone after frantic efforts to contact the mainland following the crash. Miss Everett had traveled to St Simons last Thursday with her mother.

A lightning bolt struck the residence of Eugene C Jeffers at 103 Stratton street around 4 30 yesterday afternoon severely shocking his daughter Mrs C E Shepard. The strike tore part of a chimney damaged walls and furnishings scorched a rug and tore several pictures from the walls but did not start a fire.

Plans to jail rum ring operatives in liquor fleet sweep

New York May 16 government announced plans to smash a rum ring allegedly running a liquor fleet from Miami to Boston. Authorities obtained four federal warrants charging conspiracy to violate the Volstead act and defraud customs. More warrants to be sought.

High Wind Damage Reported Near Ellaville and Schley County

L Ivey, returning to Americus from Doyle near the Marion Schley line, cites Tuesday night winds that caused extensive damage near Ellaville. Housecleaning at Water Plant Today

Water department workers began removing sediments and renovating spring heads at the pumping station to refresh Americus water supply. Superintendent Charles H. Wheatley said the project will take several days and may cause slight cloudiness, which does not affect water quality. Clarence Jeter oversees the work and expects cloudiness to vanish within hours after completion.
