Outrage over Armenian massacres prompts Congress action
The May 13 meeting of the Methodist general conference chaired by Bishop Vincent denounced Armenian massacres and urged Congress to pass a joint resolution authorizing negotiations with European powers to prevent further killings. The proposal, sent to the state of the church committee, also called for copies to be sent to both houses. The conference debated shifting meeting time to the first Wednesday in May 1900 and discussed a six year cycle to cut costs. A constitutional amendment to cap missionary society expenditures at prior year income was presented and referred to the state of the church committee.

Seven Men Drowned In Explosion Of Towboat Harry Brown
The explosion of the large upbound towboat Harry Brown, 25 miles below Vicksburg, sank the vessel in under a minute. Eleven men perished, three were saved, and several others were injured or missing. The crew included Captain Kaim, engineer Dougherty, second engineer Storey, mate Fitzmorris, pilots Kaine and Norman, and various other crew from Pittsburg and Louisville. The vessel, built in 1879, was valued at 50000 and owned by W H Browns & Co not insured.
