The president and Mrs McKinley with Secretary Cortelyou arrive Hot Springs Arkansas. They breakfast in the hotel and rest on porches. Senator Fairbanks arrives and plans a two week stay. Also reports of Life Assurance Co of America left Indianapolis, a Bourneville constable shooting error, and clashes among Filipino leaders Luna and Mascardo near San Tomas with Aguinaldo mediating. Major Diggles wounded near San Miguel. The steamer Don Jose detained by insurgents was found at Manila.
The ninth annual convention of the Police Chiefs association of the United States and Canada began in Chattanooga with several hundred delegates present. Reports read show a treasurer’s balance in the hundreds, and a committee was appointed to draft resolutions following the death of Vice President Moors. A grand encampment of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows met with about 900 delegates. Also noted are travel updates from Manila and other brief items.
Charleston hosts the Confederate veterans reunion with an estimated 25 000 visitors in town and capacity to seat 7 500, as 20 special trains arrive. The dedicatory auditorium opened at 8 pm with General Wade Hampton delivering the key speech and the event beginning tomorrow with a veterans parade. General John B. Gordon and other notable officers are in attendance. The cruiser Raleigh ran aground near the jetty but is expected to be floated at high tide with no major damage.
New York May 9 The funeral services for Mrs William Whitney were conducted at the Cathedral of the Incarnation Garden City with a full choral service and prayers by bishops A N Littlejohn and William C Downe. An 800 strong crowd traveled from New York by special train as prominent guests including Mrs Frederick May Mrs H P Whitney and Mrs William Vanderbilt Jr attended.
Bishop Quigley plans to send his report on the strike dispute to Local No. 51 and Lake Carriers' Association representatives. The final document will be issued late this afternoon after hearing all sides at his residence last evening. Meanwhile, dock activity remains tense as workers await the outcome and the Lake Carriers' delegation departed early today. Fort McPherson to be abandoned. hospital site to remain permanent and medical depots relocated from Atlanta to near the new post with troops expected. The Fifth Immune regiment, 600 men, moves from the Fulton valley road toward Osmy.
