War on Open Saloons Provokes Topeka Outcry
Topeka residents rallied in a mass meeting attended by about 8000 people after a saloon opened on the main street ending a 12 year absence. Ex Senator William T Poffer and T Williams urged citizens to take the law into their own hands and destroy open saloons by force if needed. A later clash saw a negro jointkeeper expelled from the hall. The assembly demanded Governor remove city and county officials and urged prosecution of violators.

Miners Accept Reduced Wages and New Contract Terms
In Alabama 8000 coal workers at Pratt and West Pratt mines signed a new mining contract with Tennessee Coal Iron and Railroad Co to start May 10 1897 through July 1 1893 with a 719 cent per ton base price 2 cents below prior rates. The scale ties iron price increases to coal pay and ends subcontracting. Other Alabama mines at Blocton Adger Johns Sumter rejected reductions until current contract ends.
