Three thousand delegates packed the Cleveland armory for the Methodist Episcopal quadrennial gathering led by Bishop Bowman. Delegates from Norway, Sweden, India, Japan and many nations filled the hall as early disputes over women delegates and laymen’s rights surfaced, with Bowman ruling the session not yet organized and motions struck down.
In Atlanta on May 5 Governor Atkinson imposed fines totaling 2500 dollars on convict lessees after a state high court investigation. Penitentiaries 1 2 8 face 750 500 500 dollar penalties for Bartow and Cole City camp conditions while Penitentiary 3 gets 750 for mismanagement under James M. Smith. The action followed consultation with Attorney General Terrell noting violations by lessees and sublessees including Sunday work and failure to post and report rules.
Washington speculates President Cleveland will issue a Cuban insurgents proclamation within 80 days to provoke a Spanish response and draw attention from domestic issues. General Lee’s Havana instructions aim for firmness, potentially upsetting Weyler, with decisive action anticipated despite no direct hostility to Spain. Americans Creelman and Lawrence expelled from Cuba for alleged calumnies. other dispatches note a deadly duel between two Georgia turpentine workers ending in fatalities and injuries including a bystander.
In Talpotto, Georgia two Hammock brothers Jim and Bone Hamook quarrel over field work. Jim Hamock was seriously wounded, throat cut, condition critical. The incident may lead to homicide charges if he dies. Nearby, a telegram from Tampa reports Pastor A J Diaz, a Baptist missionary, arriving after recent arrest and imprisonment by Spanish authorities.
A Brooklyn stove blast in a Johnson street building killed Mrs. Rebecca Cohen and Mrs. Pasternock and two Cohen children while two other children plus several adults suffered severe burns. Firemen found the women in the hallway where efforts to aid them ended in further flames. A second blast injured Isaac Kursham, who escaped with head wounds.
Judge Horton quashed 11 indictments against William Skabel and ten others accused of operating bucket shops. He said bucket shops are a retail trade and no real difference exists between their methods and those of the board of trade wheat business. The court suggested remaining indictments will be similarly disposed of.
May 4 in Wasnixoton the solicitor general moved to advance Weiberg versus United States for hearing this term, alleging aid to a military station in Gen annenite laws. May 6 in Toowasvittz, Ga, Charles Platt, 17, white, quarreled with Jack Sharp, a negro, who struck him with a plank causing his death. Sharp surrendered.
