McAdoo Wins South Carolina Delegates In State Conventions

In Columbia on May 6 McAdoo forces secured 82 delegates from 18 counties with direct instructions to back McAdoo for the national Democratic convention. An additional 142 delegates from 19 counties were chosen by conventions that refused instruction but adopted pro McAdoo resolutions. The state convention is set for May 20.

Texas Democrats split as McAdoo leads in precincts

From 922 precincts reporting 497 favored McAdoo for presidential nomination while 92 backed Underwood and 838 were non‑committal. County conventions to pick 1,256 delegates to the state convention will be held tomorrow. Republicans endorsed Coolidge for president and Creager for vice president, with Bailey of the Republican organization confirming broad support.

Man Eater Again Held In Strong Cell

A recently released Sumter county chain gang inmate known as Man-Eater is jailed in the city barracks for thirty days or a $15 fine after being caught by Chief Bragg for taking part in a rock attack on a smaller Negro near the chief’s home. Police seek other participants and expect more arrests. Mayor Poole presided as recorder and remarked that when the sentence ends peaches will be in season and he may have food other than men.

Cinta Clara Revolt Spreads to Four Provinces

The armed revolt spreading from Santa Clara has reached Oriente and Mantanzas with about 150 in arms in Oriente and 200 in Santa Clara. Three small bands operate in Havana province while Mantanzas hosts about six rebels. Soldiers pursue all rebels as authorities report the spread.

Revolt Spreads to Oriene Province in Cuba

Havana May 6 The revolutionary movement that began last week in Santa Clara has spread to Oriene Province with about 150 men revolting in Baire a historic town near Santiago de Cuba. The government sent soldiers to pursue the rebels and plans to seek extradition from the United States of veterans leaders.

Atlanta Short Line Completion Nears Final Stages

Secretary Henry Everett of the Chamber of Commerce announced that the Atlanta and Americas Short Line Highway between Atlanta and Americus is practically assured. The 71 mile shorter route will be improved from Thomaston to Griffin using a $40,000 Upson County bond issue to remove grades. Contracts have been let, Scott and Chambers winning the job under State Highway Department direction, with Hawkinsville firm rebuilding a section and starting work immediately.

Evans Farmers Bring Poultry To Train Net Receipts

Evans county farmers sold poultry to Seaboard Air Line pickup cars on May 6. Totals by station include Belleville 107 pounds bringing 60.70, Claxton 850 pounds earning 163.55, Daisy 392 pounds delivering 79.59. County receipts on the first trip were 270.42, compared with 305.75 on this trip.

Valdosta May 6 The 1924 commencement at Eleventh District A M school in Douglas starts Sunday May 18 with Rev Scott Wallace of Valdosta Presbyterian church delivering the sermon. Graduation exercises and the literary address by State Superintendent N H Ballard close the event on Tuesday May 20. Cooney Couple Sentenced to Long Prisons

Mrs Ce lia Cooney nicknamed the bobbed hair bandit and her husband Edward Cooney were sentenced to 10 to 20 years each. She received Auburn Prison and he Sing Sing after pleading guilty to assault and robbery. The pair were arrested in Jacksonville on April 21. They sought separate confinement but hoped for a shared fate.

New Milk Sale Orders Issued by Americus Health Officials

Americus health authorities issued new orders governing sales of milk and cream to be enforced from May 10. Signed by Dr S F Stapleton Dr J W Payne and Dr J W Chambliss, the notice directs retailers cafes markets and hotels to obtain permits from the city clerk and have producers premises tuberculin tested and inspected by officials by the tenth of the month or face prohibition.

Registration to close May 8 for two elections in Macon

Macon, May 6. Registration for the general election November 4 and the state primary September 10 will close Thursday, May 8, says Usher T Winslett, tax collector. Those who voted in the Feb 14 primary may be qualified without further registration if 1928 general taxes are paid. Special elections may occur if any are held.
