Fires Burned Out in New Jersey Timber Losses

Arcantic City New Jersey May 4 Forest fires in Atlantis county narrow to a strip between Port Republic and Leeds Point. Large tracts of fine timber destroyed and many farm homes lost with little insurance. Port Republic narrowly escaped as villagers fought flames. Richland near Vineland was threatened. deer woods pine belt eighteen miles to the Atlantic coast destroyed. Cedar swamp near Atco burned. $7,000 loss. Bear swamp area destroyed with about $80,000 estimated losses. Cigar box factory fire in Newtons May 6 damaged 3001 to 3200 East Eleventh Street. about $100,000 property destroyed, insured for $31,000. Georgia Southern line withdraws from the Southern Association effective June 1. U S Court in Macon continues. grand jury discharged until Monday. Hotels in Ashes. several buildings burned in Pittsburgh area. Three boilers exploded at Keystone rolling mill. two men fatally burned.

Fifteen Baptisms at Cordele Methodist Revival

In Cordele on May 4 the revival led by Revs. Branch and Morrell baptized fifteen new members into the Methodist church. A boys and men only gathering occurred in the afternoon, marking Cordele’s first notably successful revival. The revival continues through the week amid broad community gladness.

Conductor Picnic Draws Hundreds to Ample Ride

Promoters tout a grand conductors picnic along the A M road with special rates and a return trip planned. A special train from the S A M depot will depart about eight, linking with eastern division for day travel. Activities include barbecue, fish fry, and river views as the line builds a south iron bridge. Proceeds support a branch of the O S C in Sumter.

Central rail lease terms set for Georgia Pacific lines

Richmond and Danville has agreed to a ninety nine year lease of the Central railroad system to Georgia Pacific. The terms call for a 7 percent bond. Gen. Alexander led the Central committee, which favored lower terms than initially sought. The lease is expected to be signed within ten days to cut costs from dual management and streamline operations. There is talk of a similar lease for East Tennessee to consolidate management under Richmond and Danville.

Stockholders Meet Over Railroad Capital Increase

A stockholders meeting of the S. A. d& M. railroad was held at Glover's opera house to ratify a board-approved charter amendment increasing capital stock to reflect the road's modern standard gauge length of nearly 200 miles.
