Prices Inc advertises weekly bargains at 1240 Le with a wide range of textiles. Offers include percales, organdies, piques, and nainsook underwear. Readers are urged to visit for low prices on fabrics, linens, and garments.
A vintage advertisement extols Slave or Fras laxative syrup by the California Fig Syrup Co. It touts a pleasant taste and cleansing effects, claims gentleness on the liver and bowels, and promotes its use to relieve habitual constipation. The copy urges readers to buy from druggists and notes multiple U.S. city offices.
Established in 1881 this old time ad promotes low prices for cash buys in large lots. It touts guaranteed goods and refunds, moralizing on quick sales and email profit as a motto. The list mentions Monogram Baker's Old Oscar Pepper Old Crow Mount Vernon and other named labels and spirits.

The third day of events for the visit of the gunboat Nashville drew thousands via excursion trains. The Southern Cross home of General Wade Hampton at Cotes, 2 a.m. on May 3 was destroyed by a blaze believed to be arson. Hampton, 81, escaped with minor injuries to his mustache, eyebrows, and hair, and saved three Hampton swords. A servant discharged a week earlier is suspected of setting the fire.

Major General Guy V. Henry announces his retirement from the post of department commander and military governor in Porto Rico. In his general orders he praises Porto Ricans for loyalty and desire to adopt American methods, urges patience, reforms, and humane justice under civil authority after his departure.
May 8 Burrago reports no labor relief for unloading grain at the harbor. About 6,000,000 bushels are waiting, with 1,520 bushels unloaded so far. Henry Barter seeks to mediate between shovelers and contractors, who demand 300 shovelers. The season runs late. April imports totaled 27,460,489 bushels of grain and 343,325 barrels of flour.
