Hanging in Watkinsville
George Elder, a Black man, was hanged in Watkinsville Ga for the murder of Bob Janes. The execution, by Sheriff Overby, drew a crowd of about 400 as witnesses and followed a conviction upheld by the Supreme Court. His coffin was placed at Shady Grave Street three miles away.
