Dr Andrew M Soule president of the Georgia State College of Agriculture spoke at the Eastern Carolina Exposition in Wilson North Carolina on March 24 urging farmers to rely on fully proven scientific methods to control boll weevils and to test unproven techniques rather than depend on them.
In parallel debates at Americus and Smithville on stated resolution high school teams from Cordele Americus and Smithville, faced delays due to a wreck. Americus won the Americus debate on the affirmative with Gilbert Purvis Willia Sanborn, Cordele representatives Florence Crum Idolene Barfield. Smithville defeated Americus on the affirmative with Ethel Dean DeWitt Webb, while Americus was negative. Judges included Rev B L Jordan Elville Col Jule Felton Jr Rodney Cheves Plains Dawson Leesburg.
The Mercer Glee and Chorale clubs from Mercer University Macon gave a highly praised show at Rylander theater in Americus. Parson Chandler and Earl Lord entertained well with a Scotch act by Ronald Young. Dan Davis Seven Shufflin Synconators impressed, making the program one of the most enjoyable attractions seen locally.
St Petersburg March 24 Fellowship was the keynote by Rabbi David Mark of the Atlanta Rotary club, chief speaker at the Florida Georgia district convention closing session yesterday. He said international friendship grows from local ties and opposed barring European immigrants. Election of a governor will occur today. Macon Ga likely the next meeting place.
About 6000 barrels of oil burn in 500 barrel tanks at Comar Oil in the Tonkawa fields. A heavy smoke cloud drifts over Ponca City, over 20 miles away, as flames rage in the oil battery.
The February honor roll from Americas public schools lists high achieving students across Furlow Grammar Prospect and East America institutions. Names span Furlow First Grade to Seventh Grade with sections including Kendall Beavers Jr. Luther Bell Gus Harris and many others, highlighting strong performance across grades and schools.
Americas friends have been advised of the serious illness in Tallapa of Samuel Harrison, who has been suffering with fever for several days.
The Carnegie library has added many new titles as announced by librarian Mrs. W. C. Merritt. Notable additions include The Rape of the Lock The Story of An African Farm The Pelham Affair Jimmie Dale series Martha by the Day and Whittier's Poems among others.
Thomas county held an educational meet at Ochlocknee High School. Contestants came from Pavo Boston Thomasville Meigs Coolidge and nearby towns. Miss Ira Crew Americus music supervisor taught Ochlocknee pupils who won first prize in music in both high and grammar grades. Edna Merritt performed a Hungarian Rhapsodie and earned top honors for her school.
Dr A P Montague of Mercer University will preach at Central Baptist Church in Americus Sunday morning at 11 and evening at 7 30. He is regarded as a leading Southern orator and his two sermons are awaited with interest by local churchgoers.
In Washington March 24 Senator Ladd warned that old line political parties are crumbling unless big business is curbed. He called for an investigation of the sugar corner and argued that parties fail to face problems of the American masses. In Atlanta Hartwell Barton and S P Bond led the Georgia cross country finishers in the Tech event with Barton earning a bronze medal. Americus stood out with two top ten finishers as the race promoted healthful exercise among students and urged fitness as a basis for mental development.
Physicians treating United States Senator Samuel D Nicholson reported he is critically ill in Denver with a stomach tumor and not expected to survive the next 24 hours.
Harry Kahne demonstrates a daily feat where audiences watch and answer questions, while writing sentences backward and upside down. He explains the method and presents six daily exercises to train the mind and show the seemingly impossible skill.
Kahne's first lesson appears to day.
Woodmen of the World official W A Frazier from Omaha states a large radio station is in the Woodmen building there and the first broadcasting will be Monday night April 2 The program opens with Star Spangled Banner and includes talks and music with about fifty radio sets in use locally awaiting listener reports from stations or individuals
Edward Holdear seven years old was struck and bruised when a Seaboard conductor Harry Crawford out of Na than Murray's drug store crossing Windsor avenue Forsyth street. He escaped serious injury, saying he’d been in a wreck before.
Unprecedented mammoth ice gorges in the Missouri river and tributaries near Vermilion Sioux City Onawa and Dakota City have created flood menace. Thousands of acres of rich farm lands across three states face inundation as Sioux City homes brace for rising Floyd river and Missouri river backflow potentially flooding forty more blocks.
London March 24 Former Greek Premier Venizelos told Allied delegates financial sub committee he favored Turkish counter proposals to the Lausanne treaty draft and Greek views on financial clauses. The Turks reiterated indemnity demands for Anatolian damages. He warned Greece would seek war indemnity if Turkey refused to renounce claims.
Dublin March 24 Sheriff L Fr Watson received a message from the Detroit Police Welfare Department asking about Homer Hayes a negro reported sick and destitute in Detroit He asks for help to return to Laurens County where he would be content to spend the rest of his life Hayes is not the first Laurens County negro who went away to seek high wages and “good times” in the North and East and most are eager to return home.
The 1921 census preliminary figures show many industries more than quadrupled or tripled their output since 1914. Rubber tires and other rubber goods, petroleum refining, and asbestos products led the gains, while bells, carriages, feathers, leather belting, malt, saddlery, and wood engraving showed declines.
Weather bureau cautions that frost is probable tonight as far south as Southern Georgia. Cold wave warnings extend from Northern New York to Northern New England with lower temperatures likely in the Ohio Valley and lower Great Lakes region.
The Americus post office will maintain full service with economy in mind. Post master D F Davenport says local service remains strong and urges public cooperation during these trying times. He notes mail trains are unsatisfactory and stresses strict adherence to the mail early directive to ease handling costs at month’s end.
Richland headquarters for a coordinated burglary gang as J W Bell store and J N Clements Co were robbed. Stolen goods include shotguns, pistols, ammo, cutlery, silks, clo ths and hosiery, with losses likely over a thousand dollars. A high powered touring car was seen leaving city early morning, possibly carrying thieves and loot.
Waycross officials refuse carnival permission to operate inside the city limits. The Brown & States show will set up tents outside Waycross after a heated city commission session. Attendants and the show’s attorney offered to submit performances to a censor board for preclearance.
