Peach Festival Draws Thousands to Fort Valley Event

Fort Valley hosts the second annual peach celebration with a band concert by the Twenty-ninth Infantry from Fort Benning, a grand pageant, and a long street parade. About 1,500 Macon visitors attend the day’s program, including a George speech in Fincher park. A massive barbecue serves hundreds, with 245 hogs and other meat prepared by J L Everett and a large team of workers.

Montezuma Kiwanis Float Heads to Peach Festival Parade

On March 22 the Kiwanis club of Montezuma sent a float to Fort Valley for the Peach Festival parade. The float features Cherokee roses, the Georgia state flower, and is adorned by five Montezuma girls Miss Frances Felton Miss Annie Kate Hamilton Miss Elizabeth Forehand Miss Ruth Haugabook and Miss Helen Mullino.

$40 000 Available To Fight Boll Weevil

Washington reports an appropriation of $40 090 to the Department of Agriculture to test aerial calcium arsenate distribution against boll weevil infestation. Secretary Wallace borrowed three planes from the War Department. Last year leaf worm pilots achieved some success in Louisiana and Mississippi, and similar trials aim to combat the boll weevil in Alabama Georgia and South Carolina.

Mrs John M Weeks wife of the secretary of war became very ill aboard the yacht Everglades and was rushed to port for aid. The cause of her illness was not known.

Cocoa Florida March 22 tentative plans for the president's vacation trip contemplate his return to Washington between April 7 and 10. The vacation party cruised northward today with the houseboat Pioneer, making good progress and is expected to reach St Augustine late tomorrow or Saturday morning. The party expects to remain St Augustine until after Easter. Plans call for a stop of four or five days at Augusta on the return trip.

In Rodas Cuba on March 22 the 5-year-old Juan Toscano Ordoñez was found two kilometers from home and uninjured after being missing since yesterday. He claimed he was not kidnaped and had simply lost his way.

Last motor vehicles depart Souther Field for Fort McPherson

Fourteen trucks, the last motor vehicle equipment at Souther Field, left Americus Georgia for Camp Jesup at Fort McPherson. Capt. Thompson led 21 men to haul the trucks along the highway to Fort McPherson. Other field equipment had been sent earlier and most former officers have departed. Auditors will soon gather to close the books and transfer records to Washington.

Flames Destroy Jail In Fire At Hoboken Warehouse

Fire raged through a brush factory at Allegheny county warehouse in Hoboken ten miles from Pittsburg this morning destroying the building and spreading to other parts of the institution. More than a thousand prisoners were confined in the jail.

Leon ard Ree, 43, of Buffalo, once head of the R. Steel corporation whose public investment was about 22 million dollars, died suddenly on a westbound train near Toledo. Heart disease is believed to have caused the death.

Housekeeper for slain man held on homicide charge

Mrs An na Buzzi, housekeeper for Frederick Schneider the wealthy Bronx contractor, was arrested today on a charge of homicide for the February 26 shooting. She had been released after being held as a material witness. Detectives said new evidence connects her with the crime. Schneider was shot to death at the wheel of his automobile on a lonely Bronx road.

Floods Recede After Weeklong Ocmulgee Rise

Ocmulgee River fell back to its banks after a weeklong debauch. The river once topped 20 feet, the highest since spring 1916. Flood stage remains below Macon in the lowlands. Weather observer Harry Raynes says floods will slowly recede with no further high waters predicted.

A former secretary of the Americus and Sumter County Chamber of Commerce he helped secure Souther Field during the war before moving to Birmingham.
