In Washington March 21 Senator Turner of Washington urged a senate inquiry into alleged exclusive mining rights granted by the war department near Cape Nome Alaska and other western waters. He cited word from Alaska's governor and demanded details on authorization and beneficiaries. The discussion included related votes on election inquiry measures and a civil code for Alaska.
The House, with Mr Dalzell of Pennsylvania, forms a committee to oversee legislation for the one hundredth anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase and names members from multiple states. The House also resumes debate on the second class mail bill. On March 31 a fishing fleet from here became icebound after a brief battle with ice. The fireboat Clevelander, with provisions, freed two fishing tugs and the freighter Farley trapped in the ice. The Farley and others had limited food as they were stranded since Monday night unable to break free. The crew endured extreme cold during the two hour operation to reach safety.
The Nebraska Democratic platform gains favorable notice in Washington on March 1. Mr. Bryan’s influence is cited as shaping the state platform, with leaders generally satisfied though some feel the platform does not go far enough from the party’s traditional expansion policy.
In Manterra Georgia on March 21 Joba Bailey, a Black man held over an assault case, was shot by a mob and died in jail. He reportedly made a full confession to Sheriff Bishop and Batley’s father, who allegedly promised not to reveal it before his death.
Nat Shelton, 62, was found guilty in the circuit court of assault with attempt to rape his 14 year old granddaughter Boorisnono Alabama. He was sentenced to the penitentiary for a term of two years.
