Congress seeks evidence in graft inquiry against two reps

The Department of Justice declined to name the two representatives in the grand jury report. Thomas B. Felder head of a Georgia law firm and Gordon B. Means former DOJ agent are indicted in New York federal court for obstructing justice and offering 65000 to bribe U S Attorney General Daugherty and prosecutors to shield men tied to a mail fraud scheme that yielded 175000. Citrus fruit crop size announced for season

Atlanta March 8. The USDA reports total indicated production of oranges, tangerines and grapefruit at 22.7 million boxes for the season. Oranges 13.54 million, tangerines 0.46 million, grapefruit 8.7 million. Commercial crop about 20 million with drops and losses included. By Feb 25 shipments reached 12.3 million boxes, leaving about 7.7 million on trees.

Washington notes that on March 8 the house ways and means committee voted down a proposal to offer full cash payments as an option in the soldiers bonus bill, opting instead to limit payments to paid up life insurance.

Miss Anne Simpson of the U S Public Health Service visited Americus and spoke to groups of women and girls. She lectured at Americus High School to over 100 girls, at Carnegie Library to about 50 women, and later to audiences in Plains under the Parent-Teacher Association.

Kiwanis Club to Visit Andersonville School

Kiwanis Friday accepted an invitation from the Andersonville consolidated school pupils and faculty to be guests on Friday March 14. The local Kiwanis club will assemble at the hotel at 10 30 and go to Andersonville by automobile. Lunch will be served on the school grounds. Miss Dorothy Cass led the singing and solos. Kiwan ians McKenzie and Rotarian Paul Westbrook attended. Sam Heys presided. The program was arranged by Bill Jones and Emmet Murray.

In DeKalb Superior Court today the $100000 suit by Mrs. Sarah Byfield against Walter T. Candler hinges on an alleged assault aboard the Berengaria during a 1922 Europe trip. Candler testifies he entered Byfield’s stateroom to find her on the bed and describes a dramatic scene leading to a demanded $25000 check.

Miners Entombed After Utah Fuel Mine Explosion

Reported in Salt Lake City on March 8 indicates about 175 miners are entombed at Utah Fuel Company No 2 mine in Castle Gate after a blast. The mine is said to be on fire and state mining authorities ordered an investigation into the disaster.

Glenn state manager for Senator Reed reported after township and ward meetings that the senator was defeated in virtually all parts of Missouri except Kansas City and St Louis. He said he was willing to throw up the sponge.

American Farm Crops Worth 12 Billion Dollars

The total value of American crops, animals, and livestock products last year reached 12.204 billion dollars, up 960 million from 1922. Crops valued at 9.953 billion, animal products 6.111 billion, minus 3.86 billion for crops fed to livestock. cotton and seed valued at 1.769 billion.

County Doctors Meet Here for Symposium

The Sumter County Medical Association gathered in Americus with attendees from Americus Plains Preston and Leslie. Two cer cer symposiums on cancer were held with many physicians participating. A banquet followed in the Windsor hotel private living room. Dr J W Payne reported county stillbirths for the first 11 months of 1923 totaling three white and 19 negro, attributed largely to venereal and preventable diseases.
