Sherman headed the march to the sea and once led the old Louisiana State Seminary in Alexandria later becoming LSU. The painting in Garry Hall was by Colonel Samuel B Lockett, a West Point graduate and Confederate veteran who helped fortify Vicksburg. The Seminary burned in 1869, and the portrait survived by cadets.
